Tiptoeing through the Tulips

Originally recorded in 1929, American musician, Tiny Tim made it famous to many of us in 1968. It’s a funny song that captures our imagination of Spring and life. As we go from Winter to Spring, we begin to plant new flowers in our gardens. As we go from the Crucifixion of Jesus to the Resurrection of Christ, we can still remember the Easter tulips adorning our sanctuary. Spring is not as cold as in Winter even in our mild Bay Area weather as we anticipate the heat of the summer.

We are in a transition time at Lakeshore as we welcome God’s plan for us to renew us and to change us; just as the seasons go about their changes and we simply need to enjoy the changes happening right in front of us.

Jesus tells a parable about the Sower in Luke 8:4-15 where the Sower scatters seeds in the field where they fell on four different kinds of soil. Some fell on a well-trampled path, some fell on rocks, some fell among thorns, and some fell on good soil. When the disciples asked Jesus to explain what this mean, he told them that the seed is the Word of God.

When God’s Word is scattered on us, there could very well be a variety of responses to God’s plan. We can expect different results—some tentative, some incremental, some producing a variety of fruit. This of course, would be expected when we are rich in our diversity as the result of our inclusiveness. Our diversity is a true reflection of our Creator’s magnificent work and will.

Now that we are in the middle of this transitional year, we patiently wait for what will come next. Your ideas and feedback have been gathered. The Envisioning Event prioritized our goals and assigned tasks to accomplish. The Senior Pastor Search Committee has been meeting and a pastor profile has been distributed far and wide inviting possible candidates to apply. This waiting time is much like what Paul wrote in Romans 8:19, 21. “For the creation waits with eager longing for the revealing of the children of God…that the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to decay and will obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God.”

In other words, we are like “tiptoeing through the Easter tulips knowing that the Lakeshore children of God have hope that “all things work together for good for those who love God, who are called according to his purpose.” (8:26b) Let us pray that the seeds sown on us will grow because we are good soil. Let us tiptoe among the Easter tulips to look beyond today with confidence that all things do work for good when we are together because we love God. Let us remain patient but also diligent going about our work in our service and ministries at LABC.
